Thursday, October 20. 2005Ontario, the 51st State
It would seem that the Canadian province of Ontario, of which I happen to be a resident of, is rapidly and willingly being assimilated into our Southern neighbor. The latest bout idiocy comes from our Attorney General who according to the CBC article that can be found here intends to force extension of DST to match that of United States. According to Americans this change, signed into law by GWB will lead to energy savings, right… Of all the things to change, I suppose no one considered doing something about all those SUV drivers, whose cars eat fuel by the truckload, but anyway…
The synchronization of the change in Ontario is being argumented by the fact that having the same time zone will make easier to maintain trade links. So, in 2007 Ontario will blindly follow US’s lead and extend daylight time. Supposedly, Quebec, 2nd most populous province after Ontario is well on its way in adopting a similar stance. Comments

I might just be stupid, but I don't get how changing DST will actually affect the earth rotation and save energy.
This will be so much trouble to get all PCs to sync with the new time settings.
The energy-saving is caused by more people sleeping while it's dark, and being awake when it's light, so you use less energy for lighting and heating.
Here in the Netherlands, DST was extended with about a month a few years back, so in oktober, in the evening it takes one hour longer before you have to switch on the lights then before.
That's true, but nobody prove yet that it saves energy, it is FUD and FUD alone. What governments do forget is the problems it causes in sleeping patterns, computer programs, etc... DST is pointless and needlessly annoying.
God I'm so sorry. I'd say don't worry, but my mother taught me not to lie. She also taught me not to torture, or to rob people, especially poor people. She also taught me something about not killing people.
Too bad more people in the U.S. government don't listen to people like my mother. As for conservation, did you actually see the press conference where Bush asked people to conserve? It was painful. I mean, "maybe, if you don't need to drive, , you could not drive this weekend." Extending DST and drilling in Alaska is sure going to do a lot to conserve energy. A whole hell of a lot more than increasing gas mileage or supporting the Kyoto treaty or... never mind, what's the point.
Ah... who cares? 6 weeks of more daylight. I can dig it..
The reason(s) the USA extended DST may be dumb but you are a fool if you think we shouldnt follow their lead simply so us proud Canadians can say we arn't sheep. I live in Windsor. Right across from good 'ol Detroit. I cross the border often and have friends/family who cross the border daily to go to work or for work. Simply for them, this would be a 6 week pain in the ass if we didn't extend DST. So lets just forget that Windsor has the most trade in north america going from Windsor to Detroit and tell everyone that this effects that ontario didnt extend DST because "we're not sheep".
Majority of my customers are in the US as well, many of whom located in California. That does not mean we should be considering switching our clocks 3 hours back so people like me have an easier time.
I would have no problem had this change been implemented for a valid reason. But, this is simply not the case, merely part of what seems to be a bogus plan to "save on energy".
Ah.... I don't get the comparison. Timezones have been around since 1918. We are talking about creating a mismatch of time for two three week periods by not following their lead. I don't see how extending DST creates larger problems then not extending it. 27% of all trade between Canada and the United States crosses the Ambassador Bridge. It is the busiest international border crossing in North America. Creating a time difference for 6 weeks by not extending DST is plain dumb.
Living in Arizona where we don't observe DST, I found the concept strange and not a little retarded.
Arizona is weirder even. The Arizona portion of the Navajo reservation, which consists of most the northeastern corner of the state, DOES observe DST. And to further complicate matters, the Hopi Partitioned Land, which lies in the midst of the Navajo reservation, follows the the Arizona standard, remaining on Mountain Standard Time year round. "I told ya not to be stupid, ya moron!"
- Ben Stern to his son Howard Look genius, given the amount of DAILY cross-border trade between Ontario and Michigan and Ontario and New York, what other choice does Ontario have BUT to follow the extension of DST in 2007? So much for "soveriegnty" huh? Why relegate ourselves to a subjective role when we can play a role in shaping OUR government on OUR own continent? http://www.ontariousa.org Think...
Ontario has a CHOICE not to follow silly convention designed to take the silliest approach to energy conservation.
Canada has it's own identity, currency, political system and idiology different from that of US on many levels. That does not make it impossible to trade with our southern neighbour, infact in many cases it makes it easier! Any (canadian) exporter will tell that big attraction for US companies is the low Canadian dollar, making similarly priced products cheaper to by from Canada. |
